Locality
Sandy Point beach in South Gippsland, has to be the most beautiful, secluded beach in Southern Australia. Stretching in an arc from Waratah Bay to Shallow Inlet, Sandy Point overlooks Cape Liptrap to the West and the magnificent Wilsons Promontory to the South. A comfortable 2 1/2 hours drive from Melbourne, down the scenic South Gippsland Hwy, thru Korrumburra and Leongatha, Saltwater is close enough for a weekend away but far enough to feel as though you've had a good 'sea change'.
Being small and relatively isolated, Sandy Point is serviced only by a general store, cafe and surf lifesaving club. In summer the beach is flagged and patrolled by the life saving club. Off season, you'll probably share the beach with a handful of people, more often than not, you'll have it to yourselves. Access to the beach is via short, easy walking tracks through treed coastal reserve.
Sane dunes run the full length of Sandy Point township, providing shelter from the elements and affording stunning, panoramic views from viewing platforms. There is nothing more inspiring, Winter or Summer, than standing on those viewing platforms looking across Bass Straight to the Prom and beyond.
Closest shopping is Foster; good pubs, cafes & restaurants at Foster, Toora & Meenyin; reknowned botanical illustrator Celia Rosser Gallery & Banksia Cafe at Fish Creek; surfing at Inverloch, Venus Bay,Waratah Bay & Sandy Point. Book in for seasonal surfing lessons & horse riding along the beach or drive east for 30mins along the coast to spend the day at Wilsons Prom; take in the sights at the Toora wind farms; visit Agnes falls: the longest single drop waterfall in Victoria, go West to the rock pools at Waratah, the old lime kilns at Walkerville and do some snorkelling or push on to the Lighthouse at Liptrap. Bring your pushbikes for some easy cycling around 'Sandy' down to Shallow Inlet or Waratah; do the South Gippsland Rail Trail. Boat hire and tours of the Prom can be arranged at the general store.
